The Worker, Homeownership, and Business Assistance Act of 2009 has extended the tax credit of up to $8,000 for qualified first-time home buyers purchasing a principal residence. The tax credit now applies to sales occurring on or after January 1, 2009 and on or before April 30, 2010. However, in cases where a binding sales contract is signed by April 30, 2010, a home purchase completed by June 30, 2010 will qualify.

The new law which was signed into law on November 6, 2009 will:

l Extend the $8,000 credit for first-time home buyers for sales contracts entered into by April 30, 2010 and closed by June 30.
l Expand to include a new $6,500 credit for owners of existing homes who are purchasing a new principal residence.
l Increase income eligibility limits to claim the full credit amount to $125,000 for single taxpayers and $225,000 for married taxpayers filing a joint return.

More information can be found at www.federalhousingtaxcredit.com. There you can find information on the tax credit - including a detailed question and answer section.
