The Worker, Homeownership, and Business Assistance Act of 2009 has extended the tax credit of up to $8,000 for qualified first-time home buyers purchasing a principal residence. The tax credit now applies to sales occurring on or after January 1, 2009 and on or before April 30, 2010. However, in cases where a binding sales contract is signed by April 30, 2010, a home purchase completed by June 30, 2010 will qualify.
The new law which was signed into law on November 6, 2009 will:
l Extend the $8,000 credit for first-time home buyers for sales contracts entered into by April 30, 2010 and closed by June 30.
l Expand to include a new $6,500 credit for owners of existing homes who are purchasing a new principal residence.
l Increase income eligibility limits to claim the full credit amount to $125,000 for single taxpayers and $225,000 for married taxpayers filing a joint return.

Remodelers and builders who do renovation or remodeling projects in homes built before 1978 must soon comply with new lead paint safety requirements set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Any company doing work in these homes must be certified, follow specific work practices and keep detailed records. At least one employee in these companies must be trained in these new requirements by April 2010. Act now to avoid fines of up to $32,500 for each violation.
